In time for Bell Let’s Talk 2025, Mental Health Research Canada has published a report that highlights the following concerns for Canadian youth. Entitled “A Generation at Risk: The State of Youth Mental Health in Canada”, it is the first comprehensive and collaborative national report of its kind to be released in at least five years.
Top findings:
- Approximately 1.25 million youth in Canada need mental health supports each year
- Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people in Canada (21% of deaths)
- Excessive screen time results in negative mental health
- Racialized youth are accessing mental health services differently.
The report identifies three key “Pillars of Change”
- Access to services: The Well is now accepting new clients with no waitlist.
- Prevention and Early Intervention. If you are concerned about your child or a young person you know, encouraging them to talk to a qualified psychotherapist sooner helps more in the long run.
- Service Quality: As a registered psychotherapist (qualifying), I bring the latest research and recent training in evidence-based practices to my practice. As well, my supervisors have both breadth and depth in their experience in the field and I benefit from their insights as we meet regularly.
