When Family Counselling Can Help
Families can be complex. Everyday stress, change, and attachment wounds can erode closeness, even in loving families. What may look like behaviour problems, repeated arguments, or withdrawal often reflects deeper attachment needs: safety, understanding, emotional closeness, and the longing to be seen and known.
Whether you feel disconnected or conflict has become the norm, family therapy offers a safe space to reconnect and heal together.
Through therapy, we help family members:
- Understand what’s really going on beneath the surface — the hopes, fears, longings, and wounds driving behaviour
- Break free from cycles such as blame, anger, shutting down, and extended silences
- Build new patterns of connection, safety, and emotional attunement so everyone feels heard, held, and supported
What Happens in Sessions
We use an attachment-informed, emotionally-focused approach tailored for families. Our therapists help you to:
- Slow down reactive cycles between family members — the push/pull of anger, withdrawal, avoidance, guilt, or fear.
- Explore and map out underlying emotional needs and fears such as rejection, disconnection, or not being understood.
- Express fears and longings in a safe space where others can receive them — often for the first time.
- Learn new ways of relating — with increased empathy, trust, security, and closeness.
It’s the therapist’s job to make sure that everyone is heard – there are no scapegoats here. Working together, you can begin to understand the cycle that keeps your family stuck in a negative “status quo.” Everyone has a role to play; everyone’s voice matters.
Who Can Benefit
Emotionally-Focused Family Therapy may be right for families who:
- Feel distant even when living together — lack of connection, chronic silence, emotional disconnection
- Frequently get stuck in patterns of conflict, defensiveness, withdrawal, or blame.
- Are navigating big changes like moves, divorce or separation, grief, blended families, or adolescence
- Want to help children or teens feel understood, safe, and rooted in trust and emotional security.
- Want to resolve long-standing relational roadblocks as adults and reconnect.
- Want deeper, lasting connection — not just managing problems, but cultivating belonging, safety, and love.
