Collaborative Psychiatric Care

Integrated Mental Health Care When You Need More Support

Psychiatry partnerships

At The Well Counselling & Recovery Services, we believe meaningful healing often happens through relationship, reflection, and ongoing therapeutic work. At times, however, additional medical expertise can be an important part of care.

Through our partnership with Psychotherapy Matters, eligible clients can access psychiatric consultation when clinically appropriate. This collaborative care model brings together your therapist, family doctor/nurse practitioner, and a psychiatrist into a coordinated circle of care focused on your well-being. Rather than fragmented care across disconnected systems, we work together to ensure support is thoughtful, collaborative, and personalized.

What Is a Psychiatric Consultation?

A psychiatric consultation provides additional medical insight into your mental health concerns. This may include:

Psychiatrists work on a consultative basis, meaning they provide recommendations and expertise to support your care, rather than replacing your therapist or taking over treatment. Ongoing care remains rooted in psychotherapy and coordinated with your family doctor, nurse practitioner, or walk-in clinic doctor.

Our Philosophy: Therapy Is the Foundation

At The Well, we view psychiatric consultation as a support to meaningful therapeutic work—not a substitute for it.

For this reason, psychiatric referrals through our clinic are intended for clients who are actively engaged in ongoing psychotherapy and committed to the process of healing and growth. This service is designed to complement deeper therapeutic work rather than function as a stand-alone assessment or one-time diagnosis.

Our experience is that lasting change often comes not only from understanding symptoms, but from exploring the emotional, relational, and life experiences that shape them. Medication or psychiatric insight can sometimes be an important part of that journey—but rarely the whole picture.

A Collaborative Approach to Mental Health Care

When psychiatric consultation is recommended, your therapist remains actively involved in your care. With your consent, collaboration may include:

  • Coordinated treatment planning
  • Communication between providers
  • Clarification of symptoms and recommendations
  • Ongoing support as you process changes, symptoms, or medication experiences in therapy

The goal is not to send you elsewhere for disconnected care, but to ensure you feel supported by a team working together toward your goals.

Is This Right for You?

Psychiatric consultation may be appropriate if symptoms are significantly impacting daily life, therapy progress feels stuck, medication questions arise, or additional clinical input may be helpful as part of a broader treatment plan.

Psychiatric consultation through this partnership is intended to support ongoing psychotherapy and is not designed for stand-alone assessments, legal documentation, or diagnosis-only requests.

Availability of This Service

At this time, collaborative psychiatric consultation through Psychotherapy Matters is available for clients working directly with Susan Zuidema, RP.

Because this model relies on an established therapeutic relationship, ongoing assessment, and close collaboration between providers, referrals are currently offered within Susan’s caseload where clinically appropriate.

As The Well continues to grow, we hope to expand access to this collaborative support model over time.

If you are unsure whether collaborative psychiatric care may be helpful, we invite you to book a free consultation to explore your needs together.
